The principal trouble with cystic acne, says dermatologist Dr Andrew Waite, is that it takes ages to clear up because it responds so slowly to treatment. "Cystic acne lesions can lead to long-term scarring," he says. "The infections that cause acne cysts usually lodge deep beneath the skin and therefore do not discharge infection waste, as a result of which cystic acne does not heal easily."
Although benzoyl peroxide works well, reactions can happen so it is suggested that any skin care product containing this should not have more than 5.5 percent of the active ingredient; should a reaction occur, products containing alpha hydroxyl acid are generally safer. It is not always possible to find an acne skin care product that works first time; however, if nothing you try seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist. If you do need to see your doctor or skin care specialist then he may give you a prescription for antibiotics or special ointments.
You may be concerned that you actually have something other than genital acne - perhaps an STD like herpes or genital warts. This is possible if you are sexually active, and the only way to know for sure it to have your doctor examine you. Yes, this is uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing, but it's much better to be certain. Once you have had an exam, and you are sure it is genital acne; you can find a way to treat it.
